Gynecologist, Midwife, or Nurse Practitioner: How to Decide for Women's Health Issues

At Between, we understand that navigating healthcare can be overwhelming. It’s especially confusing for folks who are not familiar with women's health specialists. That's why we've put together a guide to help you choose between seeing a gynecologist, midwife, or nurse practitioner for your women's health needs.

Gynecologists:

Gynecologists are specialists who focus on women's reproductive health. They can help diagnose and treat various gynecologic issues like irregular periods, pelvic pain, and sexually transmitted infections. Gynecologists can also provide contraceptive counseling, perform Pap tests, and manage gynecologic care during pregnancy. Gynecologists can handle a host of other vaginal and reproductive issues, but definitely consider seeing a gynecologist if:

  • You're experiencing a specific gynecologic problem, such as abnormal bleeding or pain during sex.
  • You need a routine gynecological exam, such as a Pap test or breast exam.
  • You're planning to get pregnant or are already pregnant.

Midwives:

Midwives are healthcare providers who specialize in women's reproductive health and childbirth. They can provide prenatal care, assist with labor and delivery, and offer postpartum care for both the mother and newborn. You might be surprised to learn that midwives may also provide routine gynecologic care, such as Pap tests and breast exams. A certified nurse midwife can also handle many other gynecological issues. Consider seeing a midwife if:

  • You're pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
  • You're looking for a more personalized and holistic approach to your care.
  • You're experiencing a specific gynecologic problem, such as abnormal bleeding or pain during sex.
  • You need a routine gynecological exam, such as a Pap test or breast exam.

Nurse Practitioners:

Nurse practitioners are healthcare providers who can diagnose and treat various medical conditions. They can provide routine gynecologic care, contraceptive counseling, and treatment of sexually transmitted infections. Nurse practitioners may also specialize in women's health and provide prenatal care. Consider seeing a nurse practitioner if:

  • You have a chronic medical condition, such as diabetes or hypertension, that requires management.
  • You need a routine gynecologic exam or have a specific gynecologic problem.
  • You're looking for a provider who can offer comprehensive and coordinated care.

How to Make the Decision:

There is so much overlap in services offered by gynecologists, midwives and nurse practitioners. When deciding between seeing a gynecologist, midwife, or nurse practitioner, consider your personal health needs and preferences. Do you have a routine gynecological need? Are you having abnormal discharge, vaginal odor, abnormal bleeding? Do you suspect you have a UTI or STI? For all of these issues, gynecologists, midwives and nurse practitioners are all great options. And we know it's essential to choose a provider who makes you feel comfortable and respected and who can offer the care and services you need.

At Between, we believe that all people should have access to high-quality and comprehensive healthcare. No matter which provider you choose, prioritize your health and seek medical attention when necessary. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact us.
